Welcome to our guide on the sacraments of the Catholic Church. Sacraments are visible signs of God’s grace, instituted by Christ and entrusted to the Church. They are essential to the spiritual journey of every Catholic. Here, we will explore five of the seven sacraments: Baptism, First Reconciliation, First Holy Communion, Confirmation, and Holy Matrimony.

Baptism

Baptism is the first of the seven sacraments and the gateway to the life of grace. It cleanses us from original sin and makes us members of Christ and His Church. Through Baptism, we are reborn as children of God. This sacrament is typically administered to infants, but adults can also be baptised through the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA).

Key Aspects of Baptism:

Cleansing from original sin.
Initiation into the Christian community.
Use of water and the Trinitarian formula: “I baptise you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”

BAPTISM PROGRAM

Michelle, our Sacramental coordinator, offers Baptism preparation programs for families who wish to have their children Baptised.

Also, if you would like your school aged children to be Baptised into the Catholic faith Michelle can organise an introduction to Baptism, being the first step on the journey of faith to receive the other Sacraments of Reconciliation, First Holy Communion and Confirmation.

If you are interested, please contact Michelle Grimsted at the Parish Centre on 5152 2942 to have a chat.

First Reconciliation

First Reconciliation, also known as Confession or Penance, is the sacrament where Catholics receive forgiveness for sins committed after Baptism. It is a powerful moment of God’s mercy and love, allowing us to reconcile with Him and the Church. Children typically receive this sacrament before their First Holy Communion.

Key Aspects of First Reconciliation:

Examination of conscience.
Confession of sins to a priest.
Act of contrition and penance.
Absolution by the priest.

First Holy Communion

First Holy Communion is a significant milestone in a Catholic’s spiritual life. It is the first time a person receives the Eucharist, the Body and Blood of Christ. This sacrament strengthens our union with Jesus and the Church, nourishing our soul and deepening our faith.

Key Aspects of First Holy Communion:

Reception of the Eucharist
Participation in the Mass
Importance of being in a state of grace

Confirmation

Confirmation is the sacrament that completes the grace of Baptism. It is the moment when Catholics receive the Holy Spirit in a special way, empowering them to live out their faith more fully. Through Confirmation, individuals are strengthened to be witnesses of Christ in the world.

Key Aspects of Confirmation:

Anointing with Chrism oil.
Laying on of hands by the bishop.
Receiving the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
Commitment to living a Christ-centred life.

Holy Matrimony

Holy Matrimony, or Marriage, is the sacrament in which a man and a woman enter into a lifelong covenant of love and fidelity. It reflects the union of Christ and His Church and is a source of grace for the couple and the broader community. Marriage is a vocation that calls for mutual support, sacrifice, and the nurturing of family life.

Key Aspects of Holy Matrimony:

Exchange of vows.
Blessing of the marriage by the priest.
Lifelong commitment and openness to children.
Reflecting Christ’s love for the Church.

We hope this guide helps you understand the profound significance of these sacraments. They are moments of grace that deepen our relationship with God and strengthen our commitment to live as His disciples.
